Ham Radio
The City of Orem, in conjunction with the Utah Valley Amateur Radio Club, hosts amateur (ham) radio courses several times a year, typically three Technician (entry-level) courses, one General (mid-level), and one Extra (advanced-level) course. Besides helping them pass their corresponding level exams, these educational and engaging classroom instruction sessions will arm the student with life-saving communication skills that, with some practice, can aid community leaders during incidents and moments where other usual means of communication have failed.
The Technician and General courses are held one night per week at two hours per night for four weeks. The Extra course is held one night per week at three-and-a-half hours per night for five weeks. During each course the student is expected to register at an online resource, participate with in-class activities, and report on assignments made since the previous class time. Instructors present a baseline slideshow presentation, but also rely heavily on visual aids using the whiteboard, online resources, and demonstrations using actual amateur radio equipment during classroom instruction.
